The Kimball Knights of Dallas took down the hometown Riverside Rebels, 61-58, to win the inaugural Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner. Riverside’s Ricardo Gathers was chosen as the tournament’s MVP by unanimous vote by the media covering the 3-day event.
Late in the fourth, the score was 56-52 in favor of the Rebels. Kimball mounted a comeback with a little over a minute to go in the game. It started with a Shannon Lilly 3-pointer. Then Lilly and Austin Franklin hit layups to spur a 7-0 run giving the Knights a 59-56 edge with 27 seconds remaining.
Protecting a one-point advantage, Knight forward Jarion Henry in-bounded the ball from his baseline with a long baseball pass that found Franklin for a layup plus the foul, making the score 61-58. Franklin missed the free throw, and the Rebels had 6 seconds to attempt to tie the game but a final shot from behind the arch fell short.
The tournament, which took place Jan, 6 -8, included 16 national-caliber high school boys’ programs. Games were played at the Pontchartrain Center, Country Day High School and Archbishop Rummel High School. Ten Louisiana high schools and six schools from out-of-state competed in the event with each team guaranteed four games.
