A year after coming up short, the John Curtis Lady Patriots finally got their shot at redemption and they took full advantage of it.
Jerkalia Jenkins scored 24 points and the Lady Patriots took home an easy 57-36 victory over Kentwood (IL) along with the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic championship in the girl’s platinum bracket.
Curtis was looking for a chance to take home the trophy after falling in the tournament championship game last year to Destrehan, making the victory all the sweeter for coach Barbara Farris.
“We knew we let one get away from us last year against Destrehan,” she said. “We really took a lot of pride into it this year and we wanted to play our best and leave with a better taste in our mouth than we did last year.”
The game never got too close as the Lady Patriots (15-1) got off to an 8-2 lead and led by 9 after one quarter. The lead would stretch to 10 at the half, 14 after three and the 21-point final margin as Kentwood (16-2) struggled to slow down Curtis’ potent offense.
